Curriculum Intent for EAL
Our curriculum in EAL intends to empower our students with the English language so that they can let their light shine brightly by being successful students and valued members of the school community.
In EAL, we develop wisdom by both learning a new language and subject knowledge in this new language. Our students face such a double challenge of learning new content in a new language that they are also trying to learn, but by equipping themselves with the English language skills, they will become stronger both academically and independently. Hope is developed by the appreciation of education and persevering through the various challenges that they encounter with learning a new language and integrating into a new school, community and country. Hope brings the self-belief that they can do this and achieve success. Our intervention lessons provide a supportive space for them to learn, practice and develop their English language skills.
In EAL, community is demonstrated by the appreciation of different cultures, language identity and integration into a new country. Our lessons explore different themes and concepts based on different countries, and offers opportunities for students to share their own cultures, taking pride in their own identities and learning from each other. This leads in to dignity, where a respect for and value of others underpins all that we do through working with and learning from others of different backgrounds in order to achieve that shared goal of being successful EAL students.
