PE

The Archbishop Tenison's School Physical Education department is a strong and successful Department which understands the value that sport and exercise plays in the lives of our pupils.

We have achieved the Sport England Sportsmark award for the last six years and the FA Chartermark for the past four years, demonstrating the level of commitment we have to the development of physical education.

We are also part of the School Sports Co-ordinators Scheme within Lambeth, which promotes and assists the development of PE within local primary schools in the setting up of extra curricular activities and clubs and organising inter-school competitions during the year.

There are three full-time and three part-time teachers within the Department, all with specialities in different areas.

All pupils in Key Stage 3 have three hours of PE/Games per week and two hours in Key Stage 4.

On site we have a gymnasium, fitness suite and GCSE PE teaching classroom with relevant equipment and resources.

Off site we have our own playing fields at Motspur park, use of the Surrey County Cricket Club (Ken Barrington Centre), the Shell Centre Waterloo (swimming), and the Brixton Recreation Center for basketball and badminton.

A strong emphasis is placed on extra curricular activities at Archbishop Tenison's and a wide variety is offered throughout the week, from weight training and fitness training to basketball and cricket. We also run teams for a variety of sports for each year group, and have achieved much success in football and athletics. Fixtures are played regularly throughout the season against local schools in friendly matches and against other schools in the London, Inner London and South London cup competitions.

Many of our pupils have achieved representative honours at district and county level in a variety of sports and this pattern is continued each year, particularly in football and athletics.

We have a strongly established GCSE PE programme where pupils are able to develop their theoretical knowledge surrounding the subject, whilst also offering four sports for practical assessment. The course is very popular and the success rate is high. A natural progression from this course is to the AS/A2 level PE course and pupils here continue to develop greater depth of understanding in topics such as biomechanics, sports injuries and sport psychology. This course provides the perfect stepping stone for entry into higher education and a degree course in sport.

Within the school there is a great variety of activities offered and something for everyone. Many pupils are involved in at least one extra-curricular club.

Archbishop Tenison's PE Department has something to offer all pupils throughout their time at school, whether for recreation or for competitive sport. We believe that we should provide as many opportunities as possible for pupils to develop and to have a proven record of success.
