Mathematics
Ethos
In Mathematics we aim to foster an atmosphere where all pupils can reach their full potential. High expectations of the pupils underpin an exciting variety of teaching and learning styles. We aim to expose the pupils to the wonderment of Mathematics, stimulating and motivating them to ask the question, "Why?" We aim to encourage and nurture the pupils into becoming confident young Mathematicians.
Enrichment
The Department runs a variety of enrichment activities. The UK Mathematical challenges have been running for three years and are aimed at our top 20% of ability range. We are very proud of the dedication and commitment the pupils show in completing the problems, indeed each year our pupils score extremely highly in this National competition. The chess club is now a regular event within the Department and a variety of revision and support classes for all three Key Stages run on a weekly basis. Inspired by our new Arts College status, we are currently planning a trip to the V&A Museum to look at Islamic Art and tessellations.
Organisation
In lesson time pupils work with pupils of a similar ability. They are taught in streamed Form groups in the Lower School (with some flexible setting), and are set into four groups in Year 10 at the start of GCSE according to their Key Stage 3 examination result. Regular testing and movement between groups allows us to ensure pupils are working at the correct level for their ability. At A Level we have traditionally opted for a mixture of Pure, Applied and Statistics modules - this year introducing Decision Mathematics instead of Statistics for the first time. We use a variety of new and exciting resources, including brand new SMP textbooks, interactive white boards, a wide range of ICT software, and graphical calculators. We enter pupils for EdExcel examinations at both GCSE and A Level.
Achievement
The Department is proud of the achievement of all Tenison's boys at all key stages. In 2003 we were delighted to be top of the Borough in terms of the percentage of pupils achieving level 5 or above. We firmly believe that the pupils enjoy Mathematics at Tenison's and that the improvements in achievement are closely linked to this.
