English
Archbishop Tenison's English Department is committed to developing pupils' Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing skills, through enriching programmes of study at all Key Stages, including A/S and A Level.
Whilst the learning at Key Stage 3 is logically informed by the requirements of SAT and GCSE examinations, we offer pupils a broader curriculum, which encompasses the study of fiction and non-fiction, poetry, drama and media texts. A varied range of stimulating approaches to learning are adopted in the pursuit of greater knowledge and understanding of aesthetic, linguistic and social/moral aspects of English; these include group work, pupil assisted learning, drama and ICT.
At Key Stage 3 our principle aim is to encourage pupils in our love of English and its bedrock, literature, which progresses in unison with the acquisition of traditional academic and critical disciplines crucial to GCSE and A Level study. English also plays a vital role in the extra-curricular life of the school, fostering the intellectual and creative talents developed in class through numerous activities: writing workshops and competitions; poetry readings; drama productions and special commemorative assemblies; the debating society and the school magazine.
Here at Archbishop Tenison's School English is not just about literacy and exam success - it is about so much more!
